Our Strength in Numbers

Six months ago, the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program faced its greatest challenge ever... a potential 60% budget cut. Through advocacy, outreach, & education, New York came to know about NOEP, and the investment that we are making every day in the lives of hungry New Yorkers, and in the economic recovery of our local communities.

The driving statistic through our entire restoration effort: Last year, NOEP assisted 25,000 new households to receive food stamp benefits, and brought in over $60 million into New York State's economy.

This one statistic helped to move legislators to take action and save our program. In fact, given this statistic, some legislators even considered increasing our funding.

If one statistic could help do this, imagine if we had more?

As NOEP repositions itself to truly be a leader in the fight against hunger in New York State, we need to continue to reposition our arguments for maintaining this vital program, and in fact, increase its funding state wide.

Words will help, but numbers will carry us to the finish line.

Imagine if we could tell a legislator that annually, NOEP helps 1,000 people in their district to feed their families as well as heat their homes...

Imagine if we could tell the state legislature that annually, NOEP assists 2,000 hungry veterans, or 5,000 disabled New Yorkers...

Imagine if we could tell the legislature that annually, NOEP helps 10,000 seniors to afford both food and their medication, and over 15,000 children are ensured proper nutrition due to this essential program...

We do not have to imagine. We can now do this.

Given the ease with which our new online system will automatically tally data for us, the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program will be able to optimize our strength in numbers.

Next week, we are introducing our twelve new statistics that will become the basis of our advocacy efforts to ensure NOEP funding, and pursue additional funding.

This means that as you are helping to fight hunger in your community, you will also be helping to secure the longevity and advancement of our program.

We are excited to unveil our new quarterly report for 2009-10. This report will reflect the same questions that will be asked via our new online system in the fall.

And given that we are now switching our reporting to a more strategic approach, it is only fair that we continue to reduce and/or eliminate our traditional reporting.
